If you're building a lean-to or debris shelter and birch is available, harvest large flat sheets and overlap them from the bottom up, just like you'd shingle a roof. Start at the lowest point and work upward so each layer sheds water onto the layer below. Secure the panels with cordage tied to a framework of branches.
For a more substantial shelter, birch bark panels can be layered over a bent sapling frame to create a domed structure similar in concept to a wigwam. This takes more time and material, but in a true long-term survival scenario — or even a primitive camping setup — it's remarkably effective.
Tinder, Torch, and Fire-Starting Gold
