Understand the specific hazards and respect them.

The prepper mindset is fundamentally about being more capable, more resilient, and more informed than the average person. It is absolutely not about taking unnecessary risks that could harm yourself or others. Black powder knowledge fits perfectly within the first definition. Careless experimentation falls squarely into the second.
