But the prepper community has always been about redundancy, and that's exactly where stone tools enter the conversation. Steel rusts. It chips. It needs sharpening tools you may not have on hand. And when modern manufacturing grinds to a halt — whether from a supply chain breakdown, an EMP event, or a prolonged grid-down scenario — your ability to re-edge a blade depends entirely on resources you've stockpiled in advance.

Flint doesn't rust. Obsidian doesn't corrode. And both can be resharpened with nothing more than a piece of antler, bone, or even another rock. "When I teach a class, I always ask people: what's your plan when your sharpening stone wears out?" says Tilley. "With knapped stone, the answer is simple — you make a new blade. The wilderness is the supply chain."

Obsidian: The Surgical-Grade Secret

Here's a fact that tends to stop people cold: a properly knapped obsidian blade holds an edge that can reach a thickness of just three nanometers at its sharpest point. For reference, the finest surgical steel scalpels measure around 300 to 500 nanometers. Obsidian is, by measurable standards, sharper.

Surgeons in some specialized fields have actually experimented with obsidian scalpels for delicate procedures, citing cleaner incisions and reduced scarring. In a wilderness medicine context — think field surgery, removing splinters, lancing infections — that level of precision matters enormously.

Jennifer Hoag, a wilderness first responder and primitive skills educator who runs courses in the Pacific Northwest, has tested obsidian blades extensively against commercial alternatives. "For fine work, there's honestly nothing better," she says. "I've used obsidian to prep tinder, dress small game, and do basic wound care in the field. The control you get is remarkable."

The trade-off, she's quick to add, is brittleness. Obsidian is volcanic glass, and it fractures under lateral stress. You wouldn't baton through hardwood with an obsidian blade. But for slicing, scraping, and precision cutting tasks, it earns its place in a layered kit.

Flint and Chert: The Workhorses of the Stone Age

If obsidian is the specialist, flint is the generalist. Tougher and more forgiving than obsidian, flint can be knapped into a wider range of tool shapes — scrapers, knives, arrowheads, and even drill bits. Chert, a closely related microcrystalline rock, behaves similarly and is found across enormous swaths of the US, particularly through the Great Plains, Appalachians, and throughout Texas and Oklahoma.

"Chert is everywhere once you know what you're looking for," says Tilley. "I've found workable material in Missouri creek beds, Texas riverbeds, along the Ohio River. You don't need to order anything online. You just need to know your geology."

For preppers who've embraced a true self-sufficiency mindset, that last point is huge. The ability to source, shape, and maintain your own cutting tools from locally available materials represents a level of independence that no amount of stockpiling can fully replicate.

Learning to Knap: Harder Than It Looks, More Rewarding Than You'd Expect

Flintknapping isn't something you pick up in an afternoon. It takes practice, patience, and a willingness to cut your hands more than once while you're learning the craft. But the fundamentals are teachable, and the skill set compounds over time.

Beginners typically start with what's called "hard hammer percussion" — striking a stone core with a rounded hammerstone to knock off large flakes. From there, "pressure flaking" uses a pointed tool (traditionally antler tine, though copper or bone work too) to shape those flakes into refined blades and points.

"I tell my students to expect about 20 hours before things really start clicking," says Hoag. "After that, the improvement is fast. By 50 hours, most people can produce a functional tool consistently. By 100 hours, some of them are making things that are genuinely beautiful."

There's a growing library of instructional resources available — books, YouTube channels, and in-person workshops held by organizations like the Society of Primitive Technology. Regional flintknapping gatherings, sometimes called "knap-ins," draw enthusiasts from across the country and offer hands-on learning in a community setting.
